Nutby Coes
Alexander (Sandy) Lynch, (April 6th 1861 – April 15th 1944), and his wife Janet (Jennie) (Baille) Lynch, (July 25th 1866 – November 12th 1952), built the old house on Nuttby Mountain, near Truro in Nova Scotia. They were married at The Falls Church on July 1st 1893 – right after the church was built. Sandy Lynch bought the land from C. L. Marsh – a general merchant who owned and operated the store at Earltown, across the road from the community centre. The house was started in 1897 and finished in 1898. The head carpenter was George Lynch from Kempstown – Sandy’s Uncle. Whilst George had the plan and was in charge, many neighbours joined in this project. The spiral staircase was a special and grand feature in the house. It was cantilevered, a special talent of George Lynch. Sandy and Jennie Lynch had four children: • George Charles Lynch (June 11th 1894 – January 28th 1978) • Willard Robinson Lynch (January 5th 1896 – June 11th 1987) • Mabel Catherine Lynch (December 5th 1898 – 26th April 1999) Mabel was the first born in the Nuttby House. • Hugh Alexander Lynch (January 17th 1901 – August 26th 1966) There was once a barn shed and wagon house, a blacksmith’s shop and an outside toilet. The property was willed to Murray Lynch – Hugh’s son by Sandy Lynch, but Murray being a soldier and away, felt he couldn’t farm it and it sold to David Crowe in 1952; he removed the staircase as it took up too much room. Doug and Irene McRae (the present owners) bought the Nuttby House from David Crowe. They lived in it from 1956 to 1959. It has since been vacant and the cows enjoy it every day. It finally fell down 108 years later on May 17th. 2006 and was buried where it stood as people started to remove boards from the building and it was feared there would be an accident resulting in injury.
